Week Four....

My love of collage art and my new artist friends have given new meaning to my definition of joy.  I look forward to my weekly class on thursday afternoons. I also know that my brain will most likely explode. But that's fine with me.  Better to explode than recede into a vegetative state.
This week we finished our project on creating a collage from some type of text.  I chose to refer to a story that I wrote years ago about my son when he was obsessed with Jim Morrison.  Yes, we are talking "The Sixties". So that was my theme. I created a collage of the history of those years.  Hope you find it "groovy" to walk down memory lane or just enjoy the experience of the Hippie years. The imprint has never left those who have been there and continues to influence our future- yes..those were the days!

Week Three.....

Okay....the collage obsession continues......This week in class the project was to create a travel poster. I looked through some of my favorite travel photos that I have taken throughout the years.  Of course, Italy spoke to me and a photo of the canals of Venice was my inspiration.  I printed a larger photo to get a better look at it but my printer was almost out of color ink so the print was only half there.  Ahhh...there are no accidents!  It became an interesting composition to work with, so I used it as a base for my collage and worked around it, pasting on old torn pieces of discarded watercolor papers and other bits of cloth etc. I worked in some black marker to outline, some italian text long the edges and soon I had a very colorful, beautiful Venice. Loving the discovery of a new way to look at materials. So, here it is: (loving the laundry!)

Collage Art-- continued....

Week two of my collage art class: The theme for this week was music. I chose to "Play the Blues" with my favorite instrument- The Sax.

I now call Collage "Poetry in Pictures".  One of the things I enjoy most is how the process evolves. I begin with an idea and cut up papers  etc arranging them in a way that conveys a feeling, emotion or idea.  However, as you play with your materials, your brain takes off and shows you something new, so it is really always a surprise to me what my finished piece of art will look like. So far, the surprise has been satisfying, not to mention fun!

In fact,  as I was working on this piece, I was suddenly driven to compose a poem that conveyed my feelings while I worked.  So here it is: (click on the image for a closer look)

BLUE MOON
So, I painted my moon blue.
It wasn’t the color of the stars that night,
or the taste of a juicy orange in my mouth that made me do it.
It wasn’t the music of John Lee Hooker or the bird
that flew past my nose while my brush was in hand.
It wasn’t the voice in my head that noticed something was not quite right,
or even the  stroke of the cat who jumped on my lap.
It wasn’t that fact that I didn’t remember algebra from 7th grade.
Nor the memory of the scream of my firstborn as he decided to enter the world.
It certainly wasn’t my red lips as I sucked a cherry popsicle.
It could have been my breath as I inhaled the  sweet scent of lilac.
But I don’t think it was.
Maybe an invader from Mars had something to do with it.
But I doubt it.
I know the moon had its own ideas that night,
but I didn’t steal from her.
I just wanted a blue moon.
And now I have one.
